2024 LEAP Awards by Design World

Design World’s VP, Editorial Director Paul J. Heney and Executive Editor Lisa Eitel presented the winners of the 2024 LEAP Awards on October 30th, 2024, in an online broadcast. These brands cross four of the company’s design engineering brands: Design WorldFluid Power World, Engineering.com, and EE World. This year’s winners were chosen by an independent judging panel of 10 engineering and academic professionals.

Bodine Won Silver

Bodine Electric Company won Silver in the Mechanical category. The product nominated in question is the Type 42R Motor Redesigned for Wet Environments. Bodine Engineers worked exclusively to construct this motor to better accommodate the needs of future customers. This motor is a TENV (Totally Enclosed, Non-Ventilated) version of the original 42R motor. The exterior center ring was redesigned all while retaining the rotor and stator.

The Re-Design in Detail

A new center ring features a smoother exterior surface without fins. The O-rings at each joint were also taken into consideration and designed with an ingress protection rating of IP-66 (IP-66 means that the enclosure is protected from high-pressure water jets in any direction). With the removal of the fan and shroud, it allows the creation of an integral wiring compartment, which enables the motor to fit easily into narrow spaces without the need of a terminal box. Terminal boxes are typically mounted on the side of the motor, which would take up too much space. The accompanying photo shows the original 42R fan-cooled design on the left (with a terminal box mounted on the side) and the new 42R water-protected design on the right (with the end cover removed to show the integral wiring compartment). The first product to use the new motor design is Bodine’s type 42R hypoid series gearmotor.

Thank You

Thank you to the judges and academic professionals that voted for our product. We also thank Design World for featuring us. Congratulations to Ogura Industrial Corporation in winning the Gold in the Mechanical category for their Power-Off Micro Clutch.

The Coolest Thing Made in Iowa Competition

The Coolest Thing Made in Iowa is an annual competition sponsored by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI) and Midwest One Bank. The competition was created to be a fun and lighthearted way to showcase the impressive diversity of products manufactured in Iowa and to promote manufacturing careers. The competition began on March 25, 2024 with a call for nominations. On April 19, the 68 nominees were announced, and the variety of products ran the gamut, from Gourmet Dog Treats to Bourbon to a Tiki Bar Boat to NASCAR Wheels to a John Deere See & Spray. Next began several rounds of popular voting to determine the eventual winner.

Bodine’s Nominated Product

Bodine nominated our type 34B6BXBL-FX gearmotor as The Coolest Thing Made in Iowa. It is one of Bodine’s newer products and the fact that it is explosion-proof increases its “coolness” factor. It is made in Bodine’s main manufacturing location in Peosta, Iowa and is bought by customers in the Oil & Gas Industry, the Marijuana Processing Industry, the Laboratory Equipment Industry, and the Chemical Processing Industry. You can learn more about the Explosion-Proof Gearmotor from the special page on our website. And you can learn more about one of the applications for this product from this Engineered Solutions story.

The Results

Bodine’s Explosion-Proof Gearmotor advanced to the Top 8. We were absolutely thrilled with the support we got and with how far we got in the competition, given the impressive number of cool products made in Iowa. The eventual winner was announced on June 5 and was the Vermeer ZR5-1200 Self-Propelled Baler. We at Bodine Electric Company extend our sincere congratulations to Vermeer on their achievement.

Bodine Electric Company exhibited at the AUTOMATE 2024 trade show at McCormick Place in Chicago from Monday, May 6 through Thursday, May 9, 2024. A team of eight people from Bodine’s sales and marketing departments took turns greeting visitors to our booth number 2180 during the four days.

AUTOMATE is the largest robotics and automation trade show in North America. Robots were definitely the stars of the show, but other products included conveyors, gearmotors like Bodine’s, and other components like encoders and connectors. The Association for Advancing Automation (A3) – the host of the event – expected the 2024 show in Chicago to be 25% larger than the previous record-setting show in Detroit in 2023.

Bodine Electric displayed our newest products at the AUTOMATE show. Shown above are our new type “56R” stainless steel gearmotor, our type “34B” explosion-proof gearmotor (which is currently in a competition to be “The Coolest Thing Made in Iowa“), our type “33A” 12 volt DC parallel shaft gearmotor, our type “22B” brushless DC planetary gearmotor (with encoder mounted), our new type “42B” brushless DC hypoid right angle gearmotor with hollow output shaft, and our type “42R” offset parallel shaft gearmotor with hollow output shaft (with matching shaft kit). One “product” we gave away to visitors was a rubber coffee mug coaster that said, “My design starts with Coffee and ends with Bodine.”

The AUTOMATE show was a great opportunity for Bodine Electric to interact face-to-face with customers, prospects, suppliers, and media partners. One of those media partners, WTWH Media, invited us to their happy hour at The Chicago Firehouse Restaurant after the first day of the show.

Thank you to everyone who visited Bodine Electric at AUTOMATE 2024!

If you are looking to cross a Baldor, Bison, or Leeson gearmotor you can now do so on our customer Support web page.

Each competitor part number is constructed differently:

For example, if you are crossing a Baldor item, the part number will look something like this GCP24004, please do not add any additional spaces, dashes, or any type of alphanumeric characters to the search box as this will not bring up the correct information.

Bison part number, e.g. 011-190-0271,  please enter the P/N with dashes just like this and the results will appear for you.

Leeson part number, e.g. M1145039.00, please enter it like this, do not include any spaces, dashes, or additional alphanumeric information.

When you perform a cross-reference search for a Baldor, Bison or Leeson stock product, here are the possible search results: (a) Bodine drop-in, (b) we offer an “almost” drop in, with differences explained; (c) no drop in, no Bodine alternative, call our CS team, (d) no search result, not in our database, please call us.

If we do not offer a “drop-in”, but the item is in our competitor database, then we explain the differences so you can compare the specs with our closest stock model. If no cross-reference is available, please reach out to us directly and call us at: 773-478-3515 (USA) and ask for an application engineer, or send your email request to: info@bodine-electric.com.

Bodine Type ABL BLDC Controls with 115VAC Input:

After a successful product life of over 30 years, it is time for our “high-voltage” 115VAC-input ABL brushless DC motor speed controls to retire.

This notice is to inform you that we are obsoleting these controls after 30+ years of service. Based on current parts availability, we can supply the control boards for another two years, with last-time-buy shipments on or before July 2024. Please plan your product orders, usage and last-time-buy quantities accordingly. Once the 2-year phase-out time frame has passed, Bodine will not be offering a replacement product for these five (5) ABL stock controls with 115VAC input.

Affected stock models: 3910, 3911, 3912, 3913, and 3921.

If your application requires a variable speed, maintenance-free gearmotor/motor, powered by either 115VAC or 230VAC, then one of our inverter-duty gearmotors and speed control system might be a great alternative. Our application engineering team will be happy to assist you with crossing any Bodine 130VDC brushless DC gearmotor or motor drive system to a similar-performance Bodine AC inverter-duty (3-phase) gearmotor/motor and speed control system.

Please send your product cross-over request to: info@bodine-electric.com

Large distribution warehouses operated by wholesalers,  retailers, or large manufacturers have turned to Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) or Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) to keep up with ever-increasing demand for faster and more economical deliveries. A major original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for AGVs contacted Bodine Electric Company to help develop two new custom gearmotors for their latest AGV. Bodine has since built, tested and shipped over 50,000 gearmotors to this customer.

The Challenge Bodine-Gearmotor-AGVs-Application-Insights

The OEM’s specifications required two gearmotors, one of them had to lift up to 1,000 lbs (with substantial peak loads). The AGV’s chassis had already been finalized, and left only limited space for the new gearmotors. The gearmotors were required to operate almost continuously for five years, under worst-case environmental conditions, and would be subjected to extreme vibration and shock.

The Result

Almost every part of these new gearmotors was engineered to match the customer’s extensive list of requirements.

  • Low-voltage brushless DC motors paired with all-new, highly efficient gearboxes prolong the AGV battery life and minimize downtime
  • Gearbox designed to simplify the assembly process of the AGV
  • Custom output shaft assembly designed for extremely heavy loads
  • Feedback device tracked the position of the drive shaft
  • 1024 PPR encoder provided servo feedback to control the gearmotors
  • “Military Style” plug and screw connections
  • Temperature sensors monitor gearmotor performance and to prevent overloads
  • Manual over-ride in the event of a power failure

Bodine-gearmotor-custom-type gearmotorWith Bodine’s help, these sophisticated robotic vehicles have been performing flawlessly all over the world. Bodine not only developed two entirely new gearmotors for the application, they also helped navigate the difficult third-party approval process. Bodine engineers extensive experience in motion control made them an ideal partner in the development of this new product, which in turn is making warehouse jobs easier, more productive, and cost-efficient.

Bodine Electric engineers bring over 115 years of application engineering and problem solving experience to a wide range of applications in industries as diverse as medical, packaging, industrial automation, and solar powered outdoors equipment. We look forward to working with you on your next FHP gearmotor design challenge.
